Ernie Martin is an attorney and 23-year city official who says constituents have told him to fix basic services.

John White has city and federal legislative experience and is a proponent of renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.

The two will face off in the Nov. 2 election for the City Council’s 2nd District seat. It is the biggest and most agricultural of Oahu’s nine Council districts, encompassing Mililani Mauka, Wahiawa, the North Shore and parts of Windward Oahu down to Heeia.

The winner will succeed Councilman Donovan Dela Cruz, who is term-limited and is running for state Senate.

Martin says he has the experience to hit the ground running on a Council that will have many first-time members.

Over the past 20 years, my wife and I have seen several changes in the district as we raised our children.

I have learned many things about government operations in the various positions I held for the last 23 years with the City & County of Honolulu.

These, along with discussions with residents throughout the district, have provided me with a unique understanding of the district and how to make it better for all of us.

District 2 is diverse with competing needs, but retaining its rural character and quality of life is important to everyone.

We need to focus on the pressing issues of today while build our future.

We need a balanced budget which can be achieved by reducing administrative costs (e.g., implementing energy efficient cost savings) while enhancing our revenues.

We need to support sensible development by redeveloping brown space instead of developing over our green space, which can create jobs without overtaxing our infrastructure; and, we need safe communities.

We need to provide safe neighborhoods so that future generations can thrive in our unique and rural district.

Mililani, HI October 18, 2010 – Ernie Martin has garnered the support of Kahana resident Ben Shafer in his bid for City Council. Shafer ran unsuccessfully against Ernie Martin and John White in the City Council District 2 primary election. According to Shafer, “We opposed each other in the primary, so I know both Ernie and John really well. To me, Ernie knows the district, he knows the people, and he knows the issues. Plus, he’s got the city experience, so he can get things through. I’m voting for Ernie in the General, I hope my supporters will too.”

Said Ernie Martin, “I am humbled by the support from my primary election opponent Ben Shafer, as well as the thousands of supporters who voted for me in the primary. It would be an honor for me to represent the people of District 2, and to use my experience to make all of Honolulu the kind of place I want my children to raise their children in.”
